Soldiers injured after APC hits tree
THREE soldiers were injured at the Townsville Field Training Area after the heavy military vehicle they were in hit a tree on Monday night.
The incident involving an Australian Army M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier occurred at the area known as High Range at Hervey Range about 8pm but the Department of Defence would only confirm details on the incident late yesterday.
A Department of Defence spokeswoman said it was believed the vehicle struck a tree.
The Bulletin understands the incident happened about 8km inside the TFTA.
Three soldiers – two aged 25 and one aged 27 – were treated at the scene by Army medics.
“In line with normal procedures, the Queensland Ambulance Service attended and transported the soldiers to the Townsville Hospital,” the Defence spokeswoman said.
“The soldiers were assessed ... one remains in hospital, one was transferred to the Lavarack Barracks Health Centre and one was released.”
Townsville Hospital confirmed the soldier that remained in hospital was discharged yesterday after spending the night.
An ambulance spokesman said one patient was treated for possible spinal injuries, the second man suffered jaw and knee pain while the third man had a serious cut to his knee.
The Defence spokeswoman said an investigation had begun and the vehicle had been returned to Lavarack Barracks for an inspection.
Defence would not name the soldiers involved or confirm their injuries.
