STUDENTS and staff at James Cook University’s Douglas campus have flocked to the opening of a new SUPA IGA store at the uni’s Clinical Practices Building.

It seems previous operator Woolworths’ loss is new operator the Bansal Group’s gain.

“We have had more than 2000 people come into the store during the opening day up to 5pm. That’s a very good result,” owner Gaurav Bansal said.

Woolworths announced last month it was exiting two Townsville stores including the JCU Discovery Rise outlet as part of cost cutting but a resolution on the Riverside Gardens Woolworths store is still to be announced.

The Bansal Group operate 15 IGA stores in Brisbane and are bringing some of the popu- lar lines, including You Foodz fresh meals, here.

Mr Bansal said Discovery Rise would change the way locals viewed grocery shopping.

“We are proud to be able to introduce the new store as the foundation tenant of Douglas campus to the JCU community and invite locals to stop and stock up on everyday grocery lines as well as healthy meals for lunch or dinner on the way to or from the work,” Mr Bansal said.

“SUPA IGA Discovery Rise will be a one- stop shop for all your supermarket needs. If we don’t have it on the shelf, let us know and we’ll get it in for you; just ask one of our new team members employed and dedicated to providing exceptional customer service.

“We strive to deliver a shopping experience that the community value, ( that is) local and convenient, while supporting local suppliers and brands, offering far more benefits than just competitive prices.”

Mr Bansal said shoppers would benefit from lower pri- ces through IGA’s Price Match Promise.

They promised to match the price of hundreds of everyday items such as breakfast cereals, coffee and pasta with that provided by the major supermarket chains.

He said each IGA always aimed to provide unique products or catering for the local neighbourhood, families and professionals.

A standout feature would be a fantastic deli with a deli specialist preparing gourmet delights and a ready- to- go range including barbecue chickens, marinated meats and condiments.

As part of the store’s transformation SUPA IGA Discovery Rise has increased its range with shoppers now able to purchase gluten- free products and international foods including American, British, Chinese, Indian and Mexican.

SUPA IGA Discovery Rise will trade Monday to Friday 6am to 9pm and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 6am to 8pm.
