STUDENT NEWS CREW

-

AGROUP

of creative budding reporters at Southern Cross Catholic College are producing their own schoolbased news bulletins.

The Shine News team allows aspiring young student reporters to deliver news stories from around the school, covering issues such as student achievements, reminders about assessment, upcoming events on the school calendar and what’s happening in the different sporting groups and clubs.

The team films the video segments on an iPad and then uploads to Youtube for the school to view.

Teacher Veronica Horn said the news team was created to help make the school’s morning messages and notices more interesting and engaging.

“This then evolved into producing a video news bulletin each fortnight which summed up what was going on around the college, reminders about important matters and what’s coming up soon,” she said. “There’s not one set formula for how it’s done with the team constantly adding and changing the way they do it and what they do.”

Mrs Horn said the Shine News team worked so well because there were varied but equally important roles to fill in the team.

“Each member brings his or her own special skills and talents to the group,” she said.

“Some students are interested in gathering the news and information so that a script or plan can be prepared.

“Then, the more extroverted drama enthusiasts present the stories and conduct the interviews.

“Last but certainly not least are the IT whizzes who film, edit and upload the final product to Youtube for the homerooms to view on alternating Fridays.

“It’s a great way to wrap up the school week.”
