Shoplift suspect sent back to prison

- LUCY SMITH

A WOMAN accused of robbing a pharmacy has been refused bail after allegedly reoffending by shoplifting at Stockland Shopping Centre.

Shandell Violet Pryor, 33, punched the walls of Townsville Magistrates Court and shouted, “I can’t go back to prison”, after she was refused a second chance at bail yesterday.

Defence solicitor Lisa McNamara said Pryor would be sentenced in District Court on July 27 for robbing a Calanna chemist in 2015.

She had been in custody more than 400 days before she was released on bail on January 27 to live with her father in Garbutt. Pryor was arrested on Sunday after police allegedly saw her stealing $ 193 worth of baby clothing from Myer.

She was charged with three other shoplifting offences dating back to April 24, two counts of trespass, wilful damage and obstructing police.

Ms McNamara said Pryor had considerable mental health issues and asked for bail, saying it could be six months before the Mental Health Court determined whether Pryor was fit to face the charges.

Ms McNamara said Pryor did not dispute the charge of stealing from Myer but would be disputing the other shoplifting charges.

Ms McNamara said one of the trespass charges involved Pryor visiting a Calanna chemist at Aitkenvale, which was not the one she allegedly robbed. She was banned from all Calanna pharmacies.

“There may be an issue there whether that is in fact trespass but that’s perhaps for legal argument,” she said.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Tim Madsen tendered an objection to bail.

Magistrate Ross Mack said Pryor had criminal history dating from 2002 to 2014 and refused bail.
