Matilda museum revives

- EMMA CHADWICK

Mark Furner, Butch Lenton and David Littleproud break ground. WORK has begun rebuilding Winton’s iconic Waltzing Matilda museum after fire destroyed the original building in 2015.

The $ 22 million project is expected to provide 200 jobs during construction and reinvigorate the region’s outback tourist experience.

The Winton Shire Council said an $ 8 million contribution from the Federal Government and $ 1.2 million from the State had allowed them to move ahead with the project.

Queensland Local Government Minister Mark Furner said the architectural design was “cutting edge”. He said the Townsville- based construction contractor Adrian Gabrielli estimated the project would support more than 200 jobs.

“The architectural designs feature large, modern open spa- ces over 2250sq m, to capture the true essence of the Outback, bring to life the legend of Waltzing Matilda and complement the region’s incredible dinosaur attractions,” Mr Furner said.

Winton Shire Mayor Butch Lenton said the loss of the original 29- year- old Waltzing Matilda Centre had been a heavy blow.

“The demolition and cleanup operation in 2015 was a tough time, but there’s no doubt about it, this is a town with a big heart,” Cr Lenton said.

“The support we had after the fire, with people coming to the town and staying in the town, from all over Australia really, was much appreciated.

“I can’t count the number of fire- damaged objects that have been saved from the ruins through the efforts of locals, and also tourists who have happily volunteered their labour.

“The Waltzing Matilda Cen- tre is an iconic Australian attraction.”

Construction of the museum is expected to be completed in February next year, with an opening in mid- April.

The original centre, which featured memorabilia and interactive displays, was built to celebrate Winton’s connection to AB “Banjo” Paterson’s famous 1895 song that has become Australia’s unofficial anthem.
