Sensible way to handle our croc problem

-

IT is great to see some common sense finally applied to the crocodile culling debate. The LNP’s proposed policy to shoot “case- by- case” crocodiles is to be welcomed.

While they are majestic creatures that should certainly not be eradicated from existence, Townsville and North Queensland residents reserve the right to access their backyard without having to cower and look over their shoulders.

We are privileged to live near picturesque estuaries and world- class beaches, with a climate that boasts idyllic swimming and fishing conditions almost every day of the year. However, as a North Queensland city, crocodiles pose a serious threat to both our lives and our lifestyle.

Under the proposal, which the LNP labelled as a commonsense approach, crocodiles would be shot on the spot if they were deemed to be posing a risk to residents. Environment and Heritage Protection officers would be authorised and trusted to determine whether they believed the reptile was posing a threat.

Boat ramps and popular fishing spots would be among the locations targeted.

The policy would also regulate the harvesting of eggs in areas where populations were rising, to help pave the way for a viable commercial industry in crocodile meats and skins. This could create much- needed jobs and tap into an untouched industry, drawing greater tourism numbers to the region.

The LNP is attempting to rid North Queensland of the inevitable — a fatal crocodile attack. There have already been nine crocodile sightings since April 9 between Cardwell and Townsville.

February’s shark attack in Cardwell which saw a local man lose his leg is evidence that North Queensland residents are not immune from the gruesome reality that nature can inflict. It is only a matter of time before a crocodile gets too close and decides to injure or kill someone we love.

This new initiative is a sensible move and one that has been a long time coming.

While a cull or safari hunting is not condoned, a sustainable way that ensures the safety of the North is to be commended. And if that means shooting a crocodile to protect lives then we applaud the proposal plan. Happy Mother’s Day to all those wonderful mums out there. Tomorrow should be the day you spend the morning in bed, treated to tea and toast. You’ve worked hard for it.
