Purple reign focus of Firebirds’ retro kit

- GREG DAVIS

ROMELDA Aiken says the Firebirds’ trademark purple dress is the team’s “shield’’.

And tonight it will also pay homage to the club’s history when the Firebirds host the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

A specially produced dress for the club’s retro game features the names of every player to step on the court Firebirds.

The current players will also have their selection number printed on their dress for the first time.

Aiken is second in games played for Firebirds with 142, behind only former captain Laura Geitz.

“We always say that our dress is our shield,’’ Aiken said.

“Every time we play we for the want to make sure we represent the dress and everyone who has worn it and make them proud.

“The girls are pretty excited to be wearing this dress though, especially in our last home game in front of all our fans.”

Aiken said Adelaide would be no pushover despite being last on the ladder.

“They’ve got a bit of momentum and are playing well. They are always beat,’’ she said.

The fifth- placed Firebirds are three points behind Collingwood with three rounds to play but the Magpies face the three bottom sides on the ladder in the run home to finals.

The retro round will include a celebrity game as the curtainraiser with Geitz and former teammate Clare McMeniman the opposing coaches. tough to
