FELDT FINDS FORM IN PENNED DE AL

COWBOYS winger Kyle Feldt believes contracts should be settled at the start of the year after crediting putting pen to paper on a three- year deal for getting back to his best against the Bulldogs.

Feldt endured a forgettable first two months but told reporters yesterday securing his future just before Thursday’s 30- 14 win in Sydney was a major surgence.

The 25- year- old also broke his try- scoring drought this year and can now concentrate on bringing consistency for the rest of the season.

“We got the deal done the Wednesday when we got down to Sydney, I had a clear mind going into the game and it showed,” Feldt said.

“It felt like it ( was weighing me down) a little bit, not knowing what I was doing next year and not having that security behind me.

“Now I feel like the weight’s off my shoulders and I can get out there factor behind his re- and have fun. I had a good year last year and personally I thought it was pretty hard to back it up and it showed.

“My consistency wasn’t there, as well as the weight of the contract stuff being on my mind probably led to some bad performances.”

There have been calls for a transfer window or trade period to be enacted after each season, similar to the AFL, but Feldt is a case in point that getting it done earlier has a host of benefits.

“Personally I think it’s better to get it over at the start of the year so it’s not playing on your mind week in, week out and leading to bad performances,” Feldt said.

“A lot of people are different, but I think it’d be better if we get it done at the start of the year.”

The Cowboys will play Cronulla in Sydney on Thursday for the first time since their shattering 32- 20 loss in last year’s preliminary final.

“I haven’t really thought about it actually, we just didn’t have the best performance and they rolled us,” Feldt said.

“They’re the defending premiers and everyone wants to step up and play their best footy, that was us last year.”
