Steph’s big step

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

TOWNSVILLE’S St e phanie Kershaw has taken another step towards her Olympic dream after gaining selection in the Hockeyroos’ World League semi- final team.

Kershaw was chosen in an 18- player squad to play in the upcoming semi- final in Brussels, Belgium, which acts as a qualifying event for the World League final and also a qualifier for next year’s World Cup.

The former Wests Hockey Club players made her successful return from long- term injury earlier this year by playing for the Queensland Scorchers against Canada.

Her great form for her state has now re- established her place in the Hockeyroos team.

Kershaw endured heartbreak in the lead- up to last year’s Olympics after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament, denying her what would have been certain selection.

But her ambitions to play at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are on track with yesterday’s team announcement. The team also featured the inclusion of senior Hockeyroos debutant Georgia Wilson. Finish in the top three of the semi- final tournament and the Hockeyroos will qualify for the World League final in Auckland, and a top five finish guarantees entry into next year’s World Cup in London.

The Hockeyroos head to Holland two weeks before the World League semi- final starting June 21.
