Warriors relish chance to rest

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

RAIN has forced the cancellation of all NQ Football premier league games this weekend, but the Townsville Warriors will rest up knowing their season is well on track.

The Warriors remain the only unbeaten team in premier league after six rounds, and were due to play Saints Eagles Souths at Aitkenvale Park until heavy rain drew curtains on tonight’s game. Warriors started the season solid fashion with three in draws, but gathered steam with wins over MA Olympic ( 1- 0) and Burdekin ( 2- 0).

Things really took off when Warriors thumped ladder leaders Brothers 4- 0 last weekend, but Warriors coach Graeme Bonato is not getting carried away.

“Things are going well, but obviously it’s a long season with a loaded schedule so we don’t want to be peaking too early,” Bonato said. “But we’re in a good place to have a strong season. To Brothers’ credit last weekend they stuck with us for much of the game and it was tough, but it was also good to make a statement at this point of the season.

“Now we have a good opportunity to rest and take care of any niggling injuries before this busy point of the season.”

Brothers will get a rematch with Warriors on Wednesday when the teams clash in Round 4 of the NQ Cup.

Wednesday’s other NQ Cup games will be played between Ross River and Burdekin, Wulguru and Rebels, and Northern Fury and Olympic.
