FIGHTER IN HIS O WN RIGHT

- GRANTLEE KIEZA

TIM Tszyu plans to continue his meteoric rise in boxing on the Gold Coast tonight even if the famous surname weighs him down.

Kostya Tszyu’s son ( he hates it when everyone calls him that) is determined to make his own name as a fighter and will tackle his fifth professional opponent, Adam Fitzsimmons from Taree, at the QT Hotel on the Gold Coast.

With Kostya’s father Boris wrapping his hands and being watched by Jeff Horn and former world champ John “The Beast’’ Mugabi, Tim, 22, did a fast- paced workout with Horn’s conditioning coach Dundee Kim at West End yesterday ahead of last night’s weigh- in.

Tim had a stunning amateur career with just one loss in more than 30 fights – losing in the national titles against Olympian Daniel Lewis, a boxer he had beaten twice.

“My childhood was more like a training camp,’’ the Sydney boxer said. “I grew up around boxing and I had a better understanding and appreciation of boxing than most people.

“At the moment boxing is undergoing a huge resurgence in Australia and around the world. Who would have thought that Jeff Horn would be fighting Manny Pacquiao before 55,000 people at Suncorp Stadium or that 90,000 would watch Anthony Joshua against Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley?

“My dad made such a big impact in the sporting world and I’m very proud of everything he did but my main goal at the moment is to get out of his shadow. I have my own style and I hope it will take me a long way.’’

Tim has fights booked until Christmas but wants a break to visit his father next month for a two- week training camp at Kostya’s home in Russia.
