Music brings home Mabo Day message

THE decision’s been made. The Queensland Government has reached agreement on royalties for the Adani Carmichael mine.

We’ve set up a framework – and any proponents will have no doubt about the guidelines they’re operating under.

North Queensland needs the Carmichael coal mine and North Queenslanders need the Carmichael coal mine. I will continue to fully support this project.

The Palaszczuk Government will honour its commitment to Queenslanders to create jobs and opportunities. We keep our commitments.

Adani will sit alongside the Government’s push for large- scale renewables and biofutures to create new jobs.

The project will also provide certainty for business and strengthen existing key industries such as agriculture and tourism.

When it comes to creating jobs for North Queenslanders and attracting new investment, we will not compromise.

As long as Adani proves it can ensure its project is viable in an open, competitive marketplace, we will back it 100 per cent. SCOTT STEWART, Member for Townsville. COMMON sense is clearly failing those people who support testing for drugs with welfare recipients.

Some are hell bent on getting high or escaping reality because not much else in their life is worth living.

They will know that weed stays in their system for many weeks but ice only for about two days. So they will buy ice instead of cannabis because the risk of getting caught is lower.

That in turn will increase violence and crime in society.

This argument about increasing violence and crime is very convincing, which means so is the opposite: if you want to fight violence and crime, legalise weed. It is that simple.

Additional benefits would include tax revenue, medical cannabis for drug- resistant epilepsy and a competitive medical cannabis industry with jobs for North Queensland.

What is stopping us except decades of indoctrination?

Time to change our thinking. Legalise it, enjoy lower levels of violence and crime, and let kids with severe medical conditions have a much improved quality of life. STEFAN AEBERHARD ( PhD),
