FOOTBALL Mooy ‘ gets on with it’
SOCCEROO Aaron Mooy has just survived, and starred in, one of the most brutal football leagues in the world, the English Championship.
Named in the English Football League Championship team of the year Mooy, 26, now has a flurry of clubs worldwide chasing his services after a stunning season with Huddersfield Town.
That experience is giving Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou warm comfort ahead of Australia’s important clash during this phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
With the Socceroos needing to beat Saudi Arabia at Adelaide Oval on Thursday to move into equal second place to give Australia a better chance of a direct route to the World Cup in Russia, Mooy’s ability to battle hard coupled with his playmaking and goalscoring abilities will put the Saudis on edge.
“Once you have to start get there you firing straight away, otherwise you will be out and then you have to fight your way back in,’’ said Mooy.
“You have to try and not miss games as well because that gives an opportunity for another player to come in. If they do a good job that makes it a hard call for the manager.
“If you start well you put yourself in a stronger position.”
Mooy led the Terriers to English Premier League promotion last week after a brilliant season where he also scored a vital spot kick in the shootout final win over Read- ing at Wembley. Mooy featured 51 times for the club, scored four goals and was credited with seven assists.
He is arguably the hottest property to emerge from the championship this season. But Mooy isn’t sure if he’ll stay with Huddersfield or move.
He won’t know if he’ll be able to experience facing the likes of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge or Manchester United at Old Trafford.
His hands are tied given Manchester City currently own his future after he was loaned out to Huddersfield during the 2016 mid year FIFA transfer window.
He left Melbourne City following the A- League season last year where his last City game was a 4- 1 loss to Adelaide United at Hindmarsh in the semi- final.
“Yeah. It’s ( my next move) not in my control, it doesn’t really matter what I want to do,’’ Mooy said.
“Whatever happens I will just get on with it. It’s part of the game.”
