McStay’s pride at marking his 50th

- GREG DAVIS

FERNANDO Alonso repeated his threat to quit not only McLaren- Honda, but also Formula One, yesterday when he faced reporters ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

The two- time world champion, who revelled in the freedom he experienced at the Indianapolis 500 two weeks ago, when he retired while running seventh, cited two possible reasons for making an exit after 16 years.

The Spaniard said that if McLaren were not able to win by September, he would leave.

“A third world championship is my biggest priority,” he said. “If we don’t win, I will jump in any car I can in any category.” CANADIAN sprinter Andre De Grasse blew past the field to post a dominating win in the 200m yesterday at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meet.

For Aries Merritt, victory in the 110m hurdles marked his first Diamond League victory since a kidney transplant two years ago. At 20.01sec, De Grasse established a personal season best, keeping him on track to take over the world title from Usain Bolt, who does not plan to compete in the 200m at the world championships in London in August. LIONS utility Daniel McStay is the first to admit the first 49 games of his AFL career have not been the most “free flowing’’.

Just a handful of wins and some untimely injuries have made the road to his 50- game milestone match against Fremantle at the Gabba today a rocky one.

But the talented and athletic key position player is adamant his next 50 games with Brisbane will be a much sweeter ride.

Taken at pick No. 25 by Brisbane in the 2013 draft, McStay made his senior debut in Round 15, 2014 when the Lions pipped North Melbourne in a contest best remembered for a post- match verbal altercation between Tom Rockliff and Brent Harvey.

McStay has been a victim of his own tantalising versatility ever since, being swung from defence to the forward line and back again depending on Brisbane’s needs.

Regardless of where he finds himself on the park, McStay is bullish about where Brisbane will be when he brings up his 100th game.

“It hasn’t been the most free flowing 50 games, has it?

“But I’m pretty fortunate and very grateful to my coaches that they’ve believed in me and given me opportunities,’’ he said.

“I definitely see a brighter future here.

“I’ve had a fair few losses in the first 50 but as a group I can see more wins coming in the next 50.”

Plenty in the football world are excited about Brisbane’s chances against the Dockers today, with the Lions coming off the bye and Fremantle coming off a disappointing loss to an injury- hit Collingwood last week.
