LOCAL businesses are still being urged to apply for work on Townsville’s new stadiumm as deadlines edge closer.

Expressions of interest t ( EOIs) for the stadium’s first t three early works packages closed on Monday, with managing contractor Watpac to shortlist companies to submit tenders by the end of this month.

Sixteen of the packages close for EOIs today and another three close on Monday.

A new billboard was also erected this week ( right), next to the project’s location.

Watpac construction northern region manager Bryan Glancy said the company was pleased with the level of interest from local businesses so far.

“However, we are still encouraging as many people as possible to visit the ICN Gateway and become part of this exciting journey,” he said. “Watpac is committed to delivering a project that provides indigenous employment opportunities, local business participation and job upskilling where possible for the region.”

Mr Glancy said the stadium’s final design was still progressing and early works would start on site soon.

“These works will include activities such as demolition of existing structures, site clearing, fencing and establishment of site services,” he said.

“It really is an exciting time for Townsville and we look forward to delivering this project with local businesses for the local community.”

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham told Parliament yesterday the stadium was being built for the people of North Queensland. “This means that soon local people will be on site in Saunders St, working in jobs in demolition, temporary fencing, temporary services and construction of temporary on- site amenities,” he said. “By the time the North Queensland Stadium is completed for the start of the 2020 NRL season, Watpac estimates that more than 2000 people will have worked on the stadium project during design and construction.” Dr Lynham said a further 53 construction trade packages would be released for EOIs today. “It’s been said before, but it’s important to say again – this stadium is going to be built by the people of North Queensland, for the people of North Queensland,” he said.
