Assault of cop lands man in jail

- EMMA CHADWICK

A DRUNK who abused ambulance officers treating him and then assaulted a female police officer has been jailed.

The Townsville Magistrates Court heard Troy Anthony Rail had fallen off his bicycle in Queen St and witnesses had called an ambulance because he was lying on the roadside.

Rail admitted he was so drunk he did not remember what happened after falling from his bike.

The court heard when Rail was put into the back of a police car he had reached through and grabbed the neck of female police officer Sgt Kelly Faulkner and he had also punched her.

“Ambulance officers were also abused when they tried to give you medical treatment,” police prosecutor Colleen Wainwright said.

Rail, who represented himself, pleaded guilty to the charges of assault and obstruct police and public nuisance.

Magistrate Howard Osborne noted Rail had a previous history of common assault and sentenced him to seven days for public nuisance, three months for the first assault and six months for the second assault of the female police officer. He will be eligible for parole in August.
