GAMES WELCOMES ALL COMERS

- ROHAN O’NEIL

TOWNSVILLE played host to sports stars of all ages over the weekend at the Athletics North Queensland ( ANQ) student games.

The North Queensland Sports Foundation came on board as the major sponsor behind this year’s event, which saw 400 students from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions showcase their talents at the Townsville Sports Reserve.

These championships also incorporated the ANQ All Comers Championships, along with the 2017 Queensland Masters Combined Events Championships, with this year’s event attracting aspiring young athletes from right across the region as well as a host of senior stars looking for Commonwealth Games and Olympic qualifying times.

Among the competitors was Australian Olympic sprinter Michelle Jenneke, with the talented young hurdler edging Brianna Beahen in the 110m hurdles final in a solid 13.1 seconds. Commonwealth Games representative Luke Cann was also on hand for the meet and his personal best javelin throw of 81.07m was good enough for a Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games ‘ A’ qualifier while also putting himself in line for a possible rolldown position for the London world championships.

All ages and abilities were on hand to compete and there were some fantastic results right across the two days of competition at the sports reserve.
