Tonkes still has shot at big league
HERMIT Park Tigers coach Jamie Fogg says the door may not be closed on Sam Tonkes’ AFL dream after the forward’s class shone through in Saturday’s 18.16 ( 124) to 11.6 ( 72) win over Thuringowa Bulldogs.
In just his second game of the year due to an ankle injury, Tonkes nailed five goals from six shots on goal, including three majors in the first term, to help set up the win for the ladder leaders.
In the battle between two clubs which have had a mortgage on the AFL Townsville flag, the Tigers built the win on a dominant first half where they established a 44- point lead.
Tonkes has been rookie listed by Port Adelaide and Richmond in the past, but his military commitments have restricted his opportunities.
But the Tigers will try to ensure he receives a posting where he can put himself on show in the North- East Australian Football League.
“We’re in the process of hopefully doing the right thing by him and if he can play consistent football, the military is looking at getting him to a posting where he can make the step up to that next level,” Fogg said.
“It’s a long way off yet but we’re definitely looking to help the kid and hopefully he can get another crack at it.
“The ball’s in his court to maintain fitness and get the results playing footy; it ( AFL) is not out of the question.”
Chris Butcher booted four goals for the third- placed Bulldogs, who are looking to defend their premiership.
