NAILBITER UNTIL THE LAST SECOND

- LUCY SMITH

QUEENSLAND s u p p o r t e r s breathed a collective sigh of relief last night when their beloved Maroons kept the State of Origin series alive with an inspirational win in Sydney.

After looking in big trouble at halftime, the Maroons fought back with two tries in the second half to clinch a famous 18- 16 win.

Cowboys legend Johnathan Thurston defied a painful shoulder injury to play a starring role, including kicking the conversion which put his team in front with minutes to go.

“Mad Queensland supporter” John Dighton, from Yabulu, celebrated at Flynns Irish Bar last night.

Mr Dighton has been at the Flinders St pub for every Origin match for 13 years, except for once when he was playing indoor cricket in Cairns.

“We’ve got a mixed crowd in here tonight – both New South Wales and Queensland. We’ve got some backpackers who are Irish supporters and have no idea about the game,” Mr Dighton said. “It is rather funny trying to explain the game to them as we go. They are round ball supporters.”
