DON’T BE DAM RIGID

- DOMANII CAMERON

MAYOR Jenny Hill has asked that the LNP not tie down the region’s water security issues to one solution.

It comes after Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls announced a $ 225 million commitment to duplicate the Haughton River pipeline in Townsville yesterday.

If elected, the funding would be made available immediately with expressions of interests for construction and design contractors to be called for within the first 100 days.

Cr Hill said while she welcomed any funding that would ease the burden on ratepayers, the region needed flexibility.

“We want some flexibility with the funding but I’m hoping that once we’ve agreed on the solution we can start as quickly as possible,” she said.

“Don’t tie us down to a solution, allow us to work with the community to ensure the best outcome for the city.”

Cr Hill said all that had been previously offered was a loan that would have been lumped on ratepayers.

“What we have now from the State Government and the LNP is a grant which makes a huge difference,” she said.

“I’m mindful that the Palaszczuk Government hasn’t tied money to a specific solution.

“I want to get on with rather than later.

“I think by having all levels involved we will get a good outcome.” it sooner

A State Government spokesman said it was pleasing to see the LNP support the Government’s plan to secure Townsville’s future water needs.

“Hopefully, the LNP will also get behind the Government’s Powering North Queensland plan,” the spokesman said.

“We’re looking forward to Tim Nicholls confirming his support for the Burdekin Falls Dam Hydro Power Station, as well as the $ 150 million clean energy hub, with transmission lines.

“Combined, the projects in the Powering North Queensland Plan will support Queensland.”

Mr Nicholls dismissed claims the commitment was in reaction to the Budget announcement.

“The fast solution and cost- effective solution is the upgrade and the new pipeline,” he said. jobs in North
