light,” he said. “They ( the council) really like the sculpture and we have had feedback saying they may have some potential homes including Queens Gardens or the new South Bank precinct, but at this stage they haven’t settled on it.

“It has a poignant message and it is a beautiful piece of art. It really deserves to be seen. I think all people, whether they are religious or not would be moved by it.”

Mr Christie said the sculpture was an iconic piece which had its own following and was featured in parks in large cities including Toronto, Buenos Aires and Rome.

“It is almost a pilgrimage place where people go to visit it, and we think it will be a tourist drawcard,” Mr Christie said.

Council arts acquisition working party and standing committee chairwoman Councillor Colleen Doyle said gifts of public art must meet certain criteria through a transparent process.

“From a personal perspective, I love the piece but we have to be open and equitable, so it has to go through a transparency process,” Cr Doyle said.

A report with recommendations is expected to go to a full council meeting in July.
