GAMING PRESSING REPEAT BUTTON

-

E3 … game sequels as far as the eye can see. One of the year’s major electronic entertainment conferences is over and now’s the time where we weigh in on who won.

Every year I basically say the same thing: the gamers won, of course. It’s great to see so much ambition and creativity going into projects to entertain us. But they don’t always get it right.

Far too often developers and publishers seem to forget how to make new things, and are just reminded on what was cool before.

Seems pretty easy to make that old thing new right? Wrong.

I really loved Shadow of Colossus when I first played it back in 2006, so I was confused to see the exact game but with newer graphics being displayed at a conference that should be celebrating the new and cutting edge.

I understand the appeal of bringing back something cool so that new gamers can enjoy it, but I probably won’t enjoy it again. Often things we enjoy from the past are tied to memories, and the emotions that went with it. When you play again, it’s not the same.

You could blame the graphics or the gameplay of a bygone era, but I enjoyed it because past Marc enjoyed it. Present day Marc is older and therefore wiser. Maybe not wiser, but I can honestly say I no longer enjoy many things today that I enjoyed some 10 years ago. That’s not a bad thing. Push forward.
