Morgan the go- to man for Maroons

- JON TUXWORTH

MICHAEL Morgan is fast becoming “Mr Clutch” on the big stage.

His skilful flick pass to Dane Gagai to set up Queensland’s matchwinning try on Wednesday is another moment to add to his highlight reel of delivering when it matters most.

The pass which put Kyle Feldt over for match- levelling try in the 2015 grand final will always be his signature moment, but his play which helped the Maroons keep the series alive is a close second.

“Not really ( I didn’t think back to the grand final), I was more excited for the moment that it was and thought once we scored that we’d be fine,” Morgan said.

“I had no doubt Johnno ( Thurston) would kick the goal and we would hold on.”

Morgan came back off the bench when centre Will Chambers was ruled out with concussion. It proved to be a blessing in disguise.

“It ( the win) is definitely up there. Any time you win wearing the Maroons jersey is good but to do it down there under the circumstances and what had been said about the team the last few weeks ( was great).

“A lot of people would have been writing us off when it was 16- 6 ( at halftime), it’s a credit to the team we found a way to do it.”

Morgan said the team lifted watching Johnathan Thurston play on with a shoulder injury for most of the match, which has ruled him out of his 300th NRL game against Penrith tomorrow.

“It’s the type of player he is, he’s the ultimate competitor and those are the things he does for his teammates,” Morgan said.

“I don’t think they would have been able to get him off anyway. It shows how much the jersey means to him.

“To see someone like him beat himself up that much and still make his tackles with a sore shoulder, it does lift people around you. Guys like myself feed off it.”

Morgan is likely to back up against Penrith tomorrow.
