Two stable after bad car smash

- CHRIS McMAHON ANDREW GURR

TWO women were badly injured in a crash in Charters Towers yesterday.

A hatchback and a utility collided at the intersection of Hackett Terrace and Stubley St about 3.40pm, scattering debris across the street.

Emergency services rushed to the scene with two women, aged 28 and 52, pulled from the hatchback and taken to Charters Towers hospital in a critical condition. The condition of the women was later changed to stable.

One women had serious chest injuries, while the other had multiple fractures and a head injury.

The driver of the utility was taken to hospital in a stable condition with neck pain, but was released soon after arrival.

Inspector Damien Crosby said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, but early investigations suggested the hatchback may have failed to give way at the intersection.

“One female has a fractured rib, and the other has a broken wrist and a jaw injury. They are still in hospital, but their injuries aren’t life threatening,” Insp Crosby said.

“There is a give way sign at the intersection and police are investigating whether there was a fail to give way as a contributory cause.”

The two injured women remained in a stable condition in Charters Towers Hospital last night. Police investigations are continuing.
