RIDE TIME F OR A S T YLISH REVOLUTION

- DANNI SHAFIK

THE Strand will be full of elegantly dressed cyclists today as the Style Over Speed Black Tie Ride pedals off at 4pm.

Style Over Speed is a traffic- stopping black- tie affair that will see around 60 cyclists parade through town along The Strand and out to the casino and back for their fifth year.

This ride has been put on by Space for Cycling Townsville, formerly known as the Townsville Bicycle Users Group, to encourage cycling safety in the community.

Founder Rebecca Ryan said the ride was a lighthearted celebration of cycling, with spectators encouraged to come out to support the riders.

“It is an approach to advocate for better facilities for cycling and better behaviour by other road users towards cyclists,” she said.

“People see a bike and just think of lycra and a hassle on the roads but really it’s families out to enjoy our lifestyle here in Townsville.

“The best way to change perceptions and attitudes is through the arts and celebrations.”

Riders will finish at the Perfume Gardens about 6.30pm, where they will hit the red carpet before a night of entertainment including live music and a fashion parade.

Riders can still today for $ 10 each. register
