The best carnival in junior football

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE field is again bursting at the seams at this year’s Gorden Tallis Cup.

The under- 10 junior rugby league extravaganza starts this morning, and like last year has attracted the maximum 64 teams from as far away as Brisbane, Charleville and Mt Isa.

A strong southeast Queensland presence will be felt at the two- day tournament, with teams such as Brisbane Brothers and Ipswich Hornets making the trip north.

In their way is a host of strong local teams, including Townsville Brothers, Western Lions and United Suburbs.

Palm Island will showcase their talent this weekend, having been drawn in a pool group including Centrals Gold and Innisfail Cowboys.

Teams from Bowen, the Burdekin, Herbert River and Charters Towers will also take part in seven pool groups.

Gorden Tallis will be present throughout the weekend and will sign autographs and pose for photos.

“I thoroughly enjoy being part of the weekend, I really do,” Tallis said, who played his junior footy with Centrals.

“I remember being part of carnivals like this when I was a young fella and how much fun it was playing with your mates.

“It’s also exciting for the teams who get to travel.

“Getting on a bus with your young teammates and playing in a carnival together, there’s nothing like it.”

Games kick off today and tomorrow from 8.30am, with grand finals being played tomorrow from 3pm.
