CIRCUIT IS ‘ AWESOME’

RACE legend Dick Johnson has declared the Townsville 400 one of the best tracks on the Supercar circuit.

The motorsport guru believes the hybrid track, mixing street and purpose- built track makes for an exciting race.

Johnson said Reid Park was a real challenge for drivers but also offered plenty of opportunities for passing, which made it exciting for fans.

“It’s always a great event. Certainly over the last few years it plateaued, but I think this year, it’s really, picked up,” he said.

“The weather up here is perfect … the racetrack itself is a real challenge. I think it’s one of the superior tracks that we race on.” really

He said the Shell V- Power team was looking good this year and he was expecting big things from the team over the weekend.

“The cars are working pretty well and the drivers are more than happy with the cars. That in itself is a big step forward,” Johnson said. “We’ve done well here in the past and we’ve had some bad days. One would hope this is going to be one of the better ones.”

Townsville father and daughter duo and Aussie Racing competitors Madison and Dale Dunston have raved about the track.

Madison overtook her dad in the early practice. “It was a bit tricky because I hadn’t been on the track before, but I got used to it and had a few quick laps,” Ms Dunston said.

“Very happy with how the car went. I’m still nervous, but I hope to make it into the top 15.

“I’m starting to get more confident on the track.”

Mr Dunston said he was happy with how everything was going in the team.

“It’s very, very exhilarating, what an experience … everything went really well. It’s the first time I’ve been in Aussie Cars. I’ve never driven one, it’s very, very different.

“Madison passed me, that’s OK though … we’ve got no idea what’s going to happen in qualifying.

“The track was awesome.” DAD- DAUGHTER DREAM: PAGES 58- 59
