Call for a Furious finish

NORTHERN Fury coach Paul Roncato has implored his charges not to put their good work to waste.

The Fury are nearing the end of the Queensland NPL season and while finals are likely out of reach, Roncato says there is still plenty to prove, starting with tonight’s away game against the South West Queensland Thunder in Toowoomba.

Roncato could only watch as a handful of golden scoring opportunities went begging for the Fury in last weekend’s 2- 1 loss to Redlands.

“We’ve had a lot of bad decisions go against us that have cost us big time,” he said.

“But at the end of the day we have to learn to take our opportunities.

“We’ve been missing absolute one- on- one opportunities, and against Redlands I counted about seven one- on- one opportunities that we didn’t take.

“It’s like the saying in cricket that catches win matches.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating these wonderful chances, we’re just not taking them.”

Jono Bagley and Jake Perry ( hamstring) are likely to miss tonight’s game, while Reid Murray and Darren Walker are also in doubt after nursing leg injuries in last weekend’s hitout.

A major bonus has been the recent return of midfielder Jae Eurell from overseas.

“It’s his second game after coming back and he’s only going to get better,” Roncato said.

“We’ve had some younger guys coming in and Kyren Walters, one of our 16- yearolds, scored last weekend.”

The Fury scored a 2- 1 win over the Thunder during their promising start to the season, which saw the club win four of their first six games.

That start failed to materialise into a charge into the NPL’s top four as the wins dried up, with the next victory against Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago.

South West have experienced a contrast in fortunes, having gone winless in the season’s opening eight games before hitting form to win three of their four past matches.

“They’ll be confident, and they’re taking their chances,” Roncato said.

“We know what it’s all going to be about, and the cold conditions will probably be a shock to the system.

“But hopefully we take our opportunities.” Pick up your membership pack and FREE GA ticket to a Cowboys home game for just $ 39!* Join as a 2017 Cowboys member, and go in the draw to win a signed Cowboys jersey and football^.
