Price for car ferry evens out

SOME may com­plain about the price of the car ferry be­tween Townsville and Mag­netic Is­land, but an anal­y­sis of prices across the state shows it’s about av­er­age.

The Townsville Bul­letin com­pared the price of six car ferry com­pa­nies which ser­vice some of the most pop­u­lar is­land hol­i­day des­ti­na­tions in the state. Dis­tances and boat types vary, which im­pact on the un­der­ly­ing costs for the com­pa­nies and there are also dif­fer­ences de­pend­ing on the time of year.

Over­all, the trip to Palm Is­land is the most ex­pen­sive, with Palm Is­land Barge Com­pany of­fer­ing ser­vices rang­ing from $ 150 to $ 320.

The trip to More­ton Is­land was the sec­ond most ex­pen­sive, with MICAT More­ton Is­land Ferry charg­ing be­tween $ 199 and $ 299.

Hol­i­day- mak­ers can take a stan­dard ve­hi­cle to Fraser Is­land on ei­ther the Fraser Is­land Ferry or Fraser Ven­ture Barge. Both of those com­pa­nies charge be­tween $ 175 and $ 200.

The trip to Mag­netic Is­land is the third least ex­pen­sive.

Fan­tasea Cruis­ing Mag­netic charges cus­tomers be­tween $ 160 and $ 190.

Walk- on adult pas­sen­gers can get to Mag­netic Is­land with Fan­tasea for $ 26.

SeaLink Queens­land re­turn tickets for $ 30.

The Bul­letin con­tacted Fan­tasea for com­ment re­gard­ing its prices but the com­pany did not re­spond.

North Strad­broke Is­land was the sec­ond- cheap­est op­tion, with the stan­dard rate set at $ 75.

A trip to the Kar­ra­garra, Ma­cleay, Lamb or Rus­sell is­lands are the cheap­est op­tions avail­able.

Strad­broke Fer­ries is of­fer­ing rates to those is­lands for as low as $ 49.50 to $ 59.

Paul Vic­tory is the gen­eral man­ager at SeaLink Queens­land, which of­fers pas­sen­ger- only ser­vices to Mag­netic Is­land.

He said the com­pany did its best to keep prices as low as pos­si­ble.
