Price for car ferry evens out

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

SOME may complain about the price of the car ferry between Townsville and Magnetic Island, but an analysis of prices across the state shows it’s about average.

The Townsville Bulletin compared the price of six car ferry companies which service some of the most popular island holiday destinations in the state. Distances and boat types vary, which impact on the underlying costs for the companies and there are also differences depending on the time of year.

Overall, the trip to Palm Island is the most expensive, with Palm Island Barge Company offering services ranging from $ 150 to $ 320.

The trip to Moreton Island was the second most expensive, with MICAT Moreton Island Ferry charging between $ 199 and $ 299.

Holiday- makers can take a standard vehicle to Fraser Island on either the Fraser Island Ferry or Fraser Venture Barge. Both of those companies charge between $ 175 and $ 200.

The trip to Magnetic Island is the third least expensive.

Fantasea Cruising Magnetic charges customers between $ 160 and $ 190.

Walk- on adult passengers can get to Magnetic Island with Fantasea for $ 26.

SeaLink Queensland return tickets for $ 30.

The Bulletin contacted Fantasea for comment regarding its prices but the company did not respond.

North Stradbroke Island was the second- cheapest option, with the standard rate set at $ 75.

A trip to the Karragarra, Macleay, Lamb or Russell islands are the cheapest options available.

Stradbroke Ferries is offering rates to those islands for as low as $ 49.50 to $ 59.

Paul Victory is the general manager at SeaLink Queensland, which offers passenger- only services to Magnetic Island.

He said the company did its best to keep prices as low as possible.

“It’s increased by $ 3 in the past six years,” he said. offers adult
