LIONS’ ATTACK CRUSHES DEVILS

- ROHAN O’NEIL

THE Western Lions cracked a century of points in a massive win over the Norths Devils as part of a hugely lopsided round of results in the Townsville and District Rugby League ( TDRL) competition.

There was a huge gulf in class between bottom- placed Norths and the first- placed Lions as the home side piled on the tries in their 106- 14 win at Townsville Sports Reserve.

Norths simply had no answers as the Lions sent a message to the rest of the TDRL in the second last round of the regular season.

The massive scoreline trend con- tinued on Saturday night as defending champions Herbert River walloped University 62- 0 at Joe Baker Field while Brothers steamrolled the Miners 62- 12 in Charters Towers.

Brothers coach Dave Ackers had plenty to smile about as his team stormed to a 40- 0 half time lead, before doing enough in the second half to take down the Miners in front of their home fans.

“Ty Carucci was great for us at centre, he had a double and the winger Zac Sillis outside him had a hat- trick so that combination went really well,” he said.

“We started quite well, we showed good discipline, we took our opportunities when they arose and our attack is coming along nicely.

“As a team we take great pride in our defensive line and to keep them scoreless for 55- 60 minutes before a few late tries was really good to see.”

In the only competitive game this round, Centrals proved to be too strong for the Burdekin Roosters as they claimed a 36- 20 triumph at Rugby Park in Ayr.

The home side had an early lead but Centrals scored a valuable win to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

The TDRL under- 20s grand final was also played over the weekend and it was Brothers who finished as premiers after they took down the Western Lions 22- 18.

The Lions were left to rue a series of handling errors at the Townsville Sports Reserve and Brothers player Enemarki Shibasaki earned man- ofthe- match honours for his impressive display in the decider.
