STADIUM STORY TRACKED IN TIME

- DOMANII CAMERON domanii. cameron@ news. com. au

A TOWNSVILLE photographer has teamed up with one of Australia’s leading timelapse image experts to provide a rare insight into the construction of the city’s state- of- the- art stadium.

Managing contractor Watpac approached Budd Photography to create a timelapse record throughout the project’s two- and- a- half- year construction period.

Budd Photography’s owner, Roslyn Budd, then approached Black Box Timelapse to collaborate, with the two businesses to film from the air, ground and the CBD.

One camera has already been filming the early earthworks over the last month from atop Mint Apartments on Stanley St which will stare directly down into the open end of the stadium once built.

Ms Budd said timelapse images were a great way to show the process.

“They ( Black Box) have the technology and the knowhow,” she said. “It was an opportunity for them to be able to teach me and have the project kept locally.”

Ms Budd said while she had undertaken timelapse projects before, this was her largest.

“It’s ( the camera) taking images every four minutes which will be compiled into a progressive video,” she said.

Black Box general manager Lee Stoermer said the timelapse images would be released following the stadium’s construction.

“We will take all of the clear milestones out of the contract like filling concrete and lifting the roof,” he said.

“One of the key criteria for this project is local content so we’re partnered with Roslyn from Budd Photography and we’re training her up as well.”

Mr Stoermer said the stadium was a piece of massive infrastructure for Townsville.

“You want to be able to look back at it and go ‘ wow this is amazing’,” he said.

“We’re going to be including aerial imagery and we’re using motion timelapse as well on the ground to add a different dynamic.

“The camera is being monitored 24/ 7. Essentially it’s autonomous so we don’t even have to go near it.

“It’s solar- powered with a battery back- up.

“It’s going to be an amazing video. We’re really looking forward to being part of it.”
