Builder tackles growth at club

- TONY RAGGATT

THE Cowboys Leagues Club has awarded a multimilliondollar contract to a local builder to expand its premises in preparation for the new stadium.

Phoenix Constructions has started the $ 6 million expansion, which will happen alongside the club’s existing premises in property acquired in 2015.

Club chairman Daryl Holmes said the club was taking a strategic view by investing for the future.

“This investment is a sign of the confidence and faith our club has in Townsville and the CBD and which will prepare us well for the future, particularly when the stadium is completed,” Mr Holmes said.

“The stadium will be a catalyst for the revitalisation of the Townsville city heart. It’s an exciting and once- in- a- generation change.

“At a total cost of more than $ 6 million, it is a significant investment and we are delighted to award it to a local builder, Phoenix Constructions.”

Mr Holmes said many people would use the dining and entertainment facilities in the CBD before and after games, parking in the city or taking taxis or public transport and walking to venues.

The expansion follows the club’s award- winning $ 6.5 mil- lion redevel opment which was c o mplet e d in 2015. Mr Ho l m e s said the club had gone from strength to st r e n g t h since the redevelopment and had literally outgrown itself in two short years.

“This project will increase our floor space by nearly 1000 square metres and creates a first- class facility from which our growing member base can cheer on their team in comfort and style or simply relax and enjoy the entertainment,” Mr Holmes said.

The club’s membership was about 38,000 and growing, he said.

Club general manager Clint Williams said the new and improved facilities for members and staff would include a new dining and beverage offering, conference room, further improvements to the gaming area, a unique indoor/ outdoor kids zone with adjacent dining areas for parents and new amenities and staff facilities.

Mr Williams said the project would have very limited impact on the current trading areas.

It is due for completion in May next year.
