Cathedral School dominates again on the water

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE Cathedral School has again ruled the river at this year’s All Schools Regatta.

Cathedral won the girls and boys aggregate awards, along with the blue ribbon events of the girls and boys eights.

Trials will now be held at Cathedral over the next three weeks ahead of next month’s Queensland Schools Regatta in Rockhampton, where Cathedral has grown to become a regional force.

Cathedral School rowing coach Stephan Muhlenberg said all competitors who took part in Sunday’s regatta deserved to have their efforts recognised.

“Our school had a great weekend, but one thing that has to be acknowledged is how well all the schools competed,” he said.

“It was a really competitive day and schools like Ignatius Park College, who are building their rowing program, scored some great wins.

“Not every great effort gets rewarded with a gold medal, so everyone who participated has to be acknowledged.”

Cathedral won the boys eights in a time of six minutes and 33 seconds, just six seconds ahead of runners- up The Grammar School.

The girls eights also saw Cathedral beat Grammar, finishing in seven minutes and 12 seconds — 16 seconds ahead of Grammar.

Cathedral was pushed in the girls fours, beating St Margaret Mary’s College by four seconds, and the boys fours was even closer, with Cathedral edging out Grammar by three seconds.

Ignatius Park’s Aaron McRae won a thrilling open boys’ singles race, and Jasmine Tait won a narrow winner in the open girls’ singles.

McRae and Liam Buxton teamed up to win the boys’ open doubles for Ignatius Park, and Cathedral’s Emily Murphy and Madeleine Gamack won the girls’ open doubles.

Muhlenberg is confident Cathedral is in prime position to score results in Rockhampton.

“Last year we were quite strong, and I think we’ll be quite competitive again,” he said.
