PLAN TO EXTEND RETAIL SERVICES

- TONY RAGGATT

THE owners of Townsville’s Fairfield Central shopping centre are looking at further expansion.

Town planners Brazier Motti this month lodged a development application on behalf of Landel Pty Ltd and Fairfield Land Pty Ltd to extend an approved stage three development by adding a proposal for a mini- major tenant and more specialty stores.

Stage three comprises a 4000sq m Coles supermarket, two retail specialty stores of a combined 200sq m and some 271 new car parking spaces. The stage three supermarket will link to the existing shopping centre at the western end of the site with the creation of a “market hall” of about 2400sq m of retail specialty floorspace.

The proposed mini- major tenant of 1650sq m and more specialty stores are to be developed along the western and southern side the Coles supermarket.

A spokeswoman for Lancini Property and Development declined to comment on the latest plans but the developer said in 2015 that the $ 24 million stage three would provide customers with more options and tap into growing interest by retailers to service a large nearby residential and defence base presence.

“It really is a kind of untapped market,” a Lancini Property and Development spokeswoman said at the time.

The move comes as Castletown Shoppingworld at Hyde Park also looks to add a second supermarket, likely to be another Coles.

According to McConaghy Properties’ Castletown development application, also lodged this month, the proposal involves redevelopment of the western end of the shopping centre. The existing Target department store is to be reconfigured into a 5750sq m format with a 3750sq m supermarket alongside.

A number of small specialty stores, food and drink outlets and additional basement car parking will be provided, including reconfiguring access and car parking.

The redevelopment is not expected to proceed until next year.

A Harris Scarfe department store and Cotton On megastore, as part of an $ 80 million expansion at the Willows shopping centre, are set to open this week.
