Wickedly wonderful with witches, bats and brooms

-

I CAN honestly say I’ve seen a broom fly ... well actually, it’s the second time I’ve seen a broom fly.

The first time was immediately after I foolishly said, “If you think I’m sweeping up that broken stubby ...”.

This latest broom flying experience was somewhat different and not a fastidiously clean Kirwan fruit bat by the way.

This was across the Civic Theatre stage by a lovely young green lady with a pointed hat! I was amused to hear the stage manager yell out if she could check for dust on top of the curtains while she was there.

Maybe this is finally the answer to the Kirwan fruit bat problem, a few of these girls on brooms could do the job, and frighten those bats to Gotham City.

I’ve been going to the rehearsals of Wicked for one very simple reason, I love it. There is nowhere else I would rather be, and I’m kicking myself for letting life excuses get in the way of having a go at a role, but that happens. But I go there anyway.

This is what life should be, happy and helping, full of excitement and imagination, of giving and giving and giving.

That’s what these unbelievably talented kids are doing. That’s what our local theatre is. With many shows sold out and only 2000 tickets to go, it may finally do what the first Les Miserables did, sold out the whole season, before we went on stage first night.

As you pass the Civic, you will notice it’s green – everything is green, like my fridge. Well done to the Civic for putting up the green lights ... hang on ... or are they landing lights?

Our witches are sincerely amazing. These wonderful young ladies were born for this role, born to be green and fly brooms, and so much more.

Nina and Courtney have taken this role to new heights, so to speak, and you will absolutely love them.

The whole cast and Ryan’s orchestra are truly brilliant, but mention must also go to stage crew, Emma and her team. The people in black do a magnificent job creating the land of Oz, while Jamie’s lighting will literally take you there.

The costumes by Auntie J are incredible, the acrobats and dancers, the family at the Townsville Choral Society, all there to create a night not to be forgotten. And to think over the stage is a real Dan Gleeson gardens flying fox. Wait until you see it, bit smaller than our normal bats though.

It won’t be long before our wonderful theatre is refurbished. It begins next year, unless of course we can convince the Wicked Witch of the West End or maybe the Good Witch of Flinders East to do it!

Tomorrow night you learn the truth about, Lion, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Gecko ... maybe not Gecko, you will believe brooms can fly, and you will believe in the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Happy Wicked Days.
