NOTES FLOW IN FOR KINGS

- RACHEL RILEY

A TOWNSVILLE band now holds the title for the highest crowd- funded debut album in Australian history after it was released to radio yesterday.

In Colour, by eclectic five- piece King Social, has already proven popular with fans, after the album’s first two singles, Lemonade and Simmer Down, peaked at No. 1 and five respectively on the Triple J Unearthed charts last month.

The album brings together musical influences from all five band members with its heavy hip- hop- soul mix spliced with hints of funk, pop, rock, country and even a sample of NRL legend Johnathan Thurston’s laugh.

Almost $ 28,000 was raised for the album through a PledgeMusic crowdfunding campaign last year.

King Social’s lead singer Angus Milne said the album drew on sounds the band had been refining since the release of their first EP, It Goes Around, in 2013.

“We’ve been able to collaborate on the songwriting process more than ever and have put together an album we’re all massively proud of,” he said.

“It’s a blend of the big party bangers that go off in a live show and some that are a lot more personal.”

The band’s hip- hop artist Stevie Mitchell said putting a top- quality album together had meant learning to transition from a live performing band to a well- refined recording band.

“For us, writing and performing music has always been the end game,” Mitchell said.

“To strip that back and learn to play our respective parts alone in the studio, while bringing the same energy that we would together in a live gig, was a big learning curve.”

In Colour is available for radio play through PlayMPE and AMRAP’s AirIt; and will be available for purchase through all digital music retailers from September 3.

The band will also release a third video clip, for the track La Di Da on the same day.

King Social will tour In Colour until December, with the tour beginning today with a set the Hudson Ballroom in Sydney.

Their final tour show will be their annual King’s Christmas in Townsville on December 8 at a secret location to be announced.
