THEFT A LOW ACT

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

THIEVES robbed a special- needs Townsville man of his tablet computer and wallet on Wednesday night.

In a brazen act, three teenagers are believed to have cut a hole through a screen door at the Kirwan address to gain access.

David Frontini was asleep when he heard a noise about 10.30pm.

He first thought it was his beloved cat Miffy but when he heard another sound he investigated.

That’s when he saw one youth run out of the house and heard the laughter of two other people.

The thieves escaped with his tablet, one of the few items he owns. He had saved up to buy it from his pen- sion. His cat was terrified by the ruckus and ran from the house spooked.

“I was really upset and I called my sister and police,” Mr Frontini said.

Mr Frontini has autism and requires help doing things like cooking. Carers from Kith & Kin assist him three times a week.

He was left in tears when his cat didn’t return. He raised Miffy since she was a kitten and couldn’t bear for them to be apart.

“Not knowing where she was, that’s what got me more than anything,” he said.

Mr Frontini’s sister Louise Hill said police offered to look for the cat but fortunately Miffy returned yesterday of her own accord. Mr Fronti- ni said he was worried the cat had been hurt by the thieves.

“When she came back she didn’t want to come in for a while,” he said.

“Even then she was a bit skittish.”

He said the theft was very disappointing.

“I’m not going to resort to name calling but I’m very disappointed that they felt the need to take it,” he said. “The biggest inconvenience will be replacing my bank and pension cards.

“I’ll also have to go to the trouble to get those and provide my identity so I can get another proof- of- age card.”

Ms Hill said she was grateful a Townsville man had offered to lend her brother a tablet.

“We also want to thank police, they were very kind,” she said.

A spokeswoman for police confirmed officers were investigating the break- and- enter incident.
