Players stay out of new coach selection

- TRAVIS MEYN

THEY played a part in bringing down Neil Henry but the opinion of Gold Coast Titans players will count for little when it comes to appointing a new coach.

Titans board members will meet today to begin the process of finding a new coach after Henry was sacked on Monday.

The Titans and Henry are still in negotiations over a settlement for the contract termination but the club has made appointing a new coach a priority.

It is expected a panel will be created by the board to begin the search with the hope of a coach being signed well before pre- season training starts in early November.

A factor in Henry’s downfall following three years at the Titans was his deteriorating relationship with some players, none more prominent than fullback Jarryd Hayne ( left).

But the opinion of players will not be actively sought and centre Dale Copley said he was fine with that.

“It’s not really a decision for the playing group, it’s a decision the board’s got to make,” Copley said.

“They’ll obviously get all the applications and info and they’ll pick the person they deem the best for the job going forward.

“We kind of have to have faith in the board. We don’t get a decision and nor should we.

“They hold the best interest of the club at the forefront.”
