NQ lock in Gela- Mosby

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

NORTH Queensland Cowboys flyer Gideon Gela- Mosby has been locked away until at least the end of 2019 after signing a two- year contract extension.

The Cowboys confirmed Gela- Mosby’s retention yesterday, just two days before the last game of their regular NRL season.

Born in Cairns and raised on Darnley Island in the Torres Strait, Gela- Mosby made his NRL debut this year in Round 4 and played four games as injury cover.

He’s played most of his rugby league with Cowboys feeder team the Northern Pride, who finished their season last weekend after failing to make the Queensland Cup finals.

“He certainly brings speed and he knows where the tryline is,” Cowboys coach Paul Green said earlier this year.

“He scored a heap of tries playing under- 20s.”

“We’ve all seen what he did in the Nines.”

Gela- Mosby previously said he would work tooth and nail to impress Cowboys coaching staff throughout the year.

“I expect a lot of a challenge because I’m going up against bigger guys,” he said.

“It will be a good challenge for my speed and stuff, but I’m ready for it.

“To improve myself I have to get everything off the field right.

“That will give me a good headspace so that I can play better at footy; off the field at the moment I’m getting everything all right.

“I’ve been committed ever since preseason started. It’s been hard sometimes because at the start of it, it was really hard, but I got the hang of it.”

The Cowboys still have a major fight on their hands to retain the chunk out of its backline past 2018. Antonio Winterstein, Justin O’Neill, Kane Linnett and Lachlan Coote are all off contract after next season.
