It’s safety first for race return to Cluden Park

-

CLUDEN Park is on track for a return to racing late this month as the extensive remediation project nears its completion.

The majority of the work on site has been finalised, with surface sand settling after a process which included scarification and close- mowing of the surface.

The track was also hollow- tined which removes organic matter such as thatch.

Over the coming weeks, the 550 cubic metres of washed river sand used on the track will settle allowing the grass to grow to an ideal height of 55mm.

To ensure the track is at its best when racing resumes, Racing Queensland along with Townsville Turf Club have decided not to go ahead with the meeting scheduled for September 14.

Instead, two races have been added to the cards at neighbouring meetings at the Herbert River Jockey Club on September 9 and the Mackay Turf Club on September 16.

RQ has boosted prize money for Townsville’s next meeting on September 28 by 25 per cent, meaning all seven races programmed will run for $ 15,000 each.

The increase is expected to attract larger fields with the opportunity to divide some races on the day if numbers allow.

Townsville Turf Club chairman Malcolm Petrofski said the track was looking close to race- fit, but the club felt it was best to take a more cautious approach before hosting its first meeting.

“We would rather err on the side of caution to ensure the long- term suitability and performance of the racing surface. Quality and safety are always paramount in every decision we make,” he said.
