National stage for fab five

- TRENT SLATTER

THEY have already taken on and exceeded against the best Queensland has to offer.

Now a group of five young Townsville motocross riders are preparing to show what they can do against Australia’s best on the national stage.

Heath Fisher, Thomas Wood, Brock Sleader and brothers Zac and Riley Watson will make the trip to Horsham in regional Victoria later this month for the Australian Junior MX Championships.

Their national championship bids come off the back of some impressive performances at last month’s Queensland titles, which were contested over two rounds.

The riders impressed during their home meet in Townsville and backed it up with some more accomplished riding at a race meet in Tivoli.

Zac ( 85cc 12- 13 years) and Heath ( 50cc auto 7- 9 years) were both crowned state champions while Brock claimed third place racing alongside Zac.

Thomas was in contention for third in the 65cc 10- 11 years class before another rider landed on him and he had to pull out of the second round.

Riley finished fifth in the same class.

The boys’ strong results at state level will be a huge confidence boost as they prepare to step up for the national championships.

Zac is sure to lead the charge after he won his first national title in the 65cc division last year, overcoming wild storms during the week and a crash in his final race.
