Baseball glory up for grabs

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

WILL the Jethawks pluck the Avengers? Or will the Avengers strike down the Jethawks?

Recent history suggests tomorrow’s Baseball Association of Townsville grand final could go either way.

The Northern Jethawks and Townsville Avengers clash in tomorrow’s senior baseball final at Jabiru Park, Condon, with the Jethawks playing for a third consecutive title.

They also won this year’s minor premiership, but the Avengers will be chasing history as they enter their first decider since joining the senior ranks in 2015.

The Jethawks hold a 15- 3 win- loss record and have beaten the Avengers four times out of their six regular season meetings, although all margins have been decided by close margins.

“Looking at the results from throughout the year you’d have to say the Jethawks are favourites, but anything can happen on grand final day,” Baseball Association of Townsville committee member Troy Tucker said.

“It’s just been that type of season, and Avengers will be pumped because this is their first time here.

Tucker said tomorrow’s game would feature some American baseball theatre, including a traditional singing of Sweet Caroline during the seventh- inning stretch, along with other music throughout the game.

“We just want to pump it up and make it a proper game- day experience,” he said.

“It’s something different and we just want to build it up.”

A junior grand final curtainraiser will be played between the Mustangs and Jets.

Tomorrow’s junior final stars at 8am followed by the senior final at 10am.
