SCIENCE- MINDED

KIRWAN STATE HIGH SCHOOL

-

KIRWAN State High School student Piper Rains will take part in the National Youth Science Forum which prepares talented young students for a future in science and engineering.

The NYSF program takes place in January each year, with the selection process held mid- year the previous year.

Students in Year 11 are encouraged to apply which includes their nomination being supported by a local Rotary club.

Piper ( pictured) was interviewed and guided through the process by the Townsville Sunrise Rotary Club.

Applications for the program began in March with the submission of a resume to the sponsoring Rotary club.

Before selection, the short- listed students attended a final stage, involving collaboration to complete team challenges, individual interviews and written work.

Piper said it had been a long and challenging but overall rewarding process to be selected to attend the forum.

“I’m really looking forward to the two weeks down in Canberra attending the forum at the Australian National University,” she said.

“It’ll be an extraordinary opportunity to develop my knowledge and passion for STEM along with like- minded students.

“I believe that this once- in- a- lifetime experience will help broaden my understanding of the career I wish to pursue in biomedical science.

“I also hope to meet many new friends and peers while at the program, and open myself up to many new opportunities in life.”
