Big night for Cowboys fans

- DANNI SHAFIK

VENUES across the North are gearing up for an invasion of Cowboys fans keen to watch tomorrow night’s NRL semifinal against Parramatta on big screens.

The Cowboys Leagues Club has a big night planned, after a bumper crowd was on hand last week, glued to the big screens for the tight win over the Sharks.

Customer relations manager for the club Helen Smyth said the venue provided a great way to watch the game with like- minded supporters.

“We were pretty full last week and the atmosphere was electrifying so we are definitely expecting a full house again,” she said.

Ms Smyth said the battle against the Sharks had people on the edge of their seats and she was anticipating a similar reaction tomorrow night.

“There’s a lot more excitement around and people believe they can do it despite the odds,” she said.

Ms Smyth said although there was more at stake this weekend, there was more belief in the Cowboys from North Queensland supporters.

“I think they really relish being the underdogs and being from North Queensland they are tough so if anyone can come from behind and beat the odds, it’s definitely the Cowboys,” she said.

“If Sunday is anything to go by we will be roaring the house down and they might even hear us in Sydney.”

Cowboys CEO Greg Tonner said everything was on the line this weekend.

“The club loves all the support it gets from home and away, so if you’re barracking from home, we still need your passion to visualise the boys winning this Saturday night,” he said.

To stir the passion of home town supporters, Townsville City Council raised a giant Cowboys flag at the Douglas roundabout yesterday morning.

Acting Mayor Cr Les Walker said flying the flag in the middle of the city’s largest roundabout would catch the attention of thousands of motorists ahead of the big game.

“Nothing compares to the excitement of the Cowboys in a finals match, and we want to show our players that the city is right behind them,” he said.
