Store manager ducks grog bottle

- LUCY SMITH

A MAN armed with a plank of wood threw a bottle of alcohol in the direction of a Woolworths manager at Vincent.

Barry George Waldren, 29, pleaded guilty in Townsville Magistrates Court last week to going armed to cause fear, obstructing police and contravening a police direction.

Prosecutor Colleen Wainwright said Waldren bought a bottle of liquor from a bottleshop at Vincent Village Shopping Centre at 10.15am on March 18.

He then walked to the Woolworths service desk with a piece of wood and asked a female staffer: “Are you talking s*** about me?”

Waldren sat down in the shopping centre and a manager asked him to leave.

“As the manager walked back towards the service desk, the offender threw the bottle he was holding towards the manager, the bottle missed him and smashed against the floor,” Ms Wainwright said.

Waldren walked out to the carpark where he was approached by police.

He aggressively resisted arrest but was handcuffed and taken to the watch house.

Waldren was fined $ 1000 and no conviction was recorded.
