Subs resurface to torpedo Wanderers Premiers fight back from loss

SUBURBAN Parks have wasted no time reasserting their premiership mojo by claiming a solid first innings win over Wanderers in game two of the 2017/ 18 Townsville Cricket season.

Wanderers started Saturday’s second day at 1/ 6 chasing Subs’ target of 189 runs, and a bowling masterclass from spearheads Mark Danaher ( 5/ 13) and Justin Dixon ( 3/ 28) – off 14 and 15 overs respectively – rolled Wanderers for 47 runs.

Subs then chased an outright victory, but Wanderers put up stern resistance to reach 6/ 153 by the end of play.

Bradley Meek ( 55) and Grant Dilger ( 36 no) guided Wanderers through their second innings, but the damage was done earlier in the day as Dixon and Danaher ripped through Wanderers’ top order.

Only Ryan Eaton ( 11) and Damien Meek ( 17 no) reached double figures for Wanderers, with the top four of Daniel Bestmann ( 5), Philip Angel ( 1), Damien Etherington ( 1) and Meek ( 2) failing to make a start.

Subs suffered an outright loss to Norths in Round 1 but captain Mark Taviani said his team had already turned a corner.

“We definitely needed to make a statement after the first round,” he said. “We spoke about not letting a lack of concentration get a hold of us and we did that.

“Wanderers are a pretty young side, but they have the ability to score plenty of runs and we knew if we gave them chances they could run away with it.

“But we put the pressure on them and we took our chances.”

Taviani heaped praise on Dixon and Danaher for their relentless consistency.

“Between them I think they bowled around 16 maidens,” Taviani said.

“That’s an incredible amount of pressure and there was hardly any let- up.”

Subs will be without Riley Ward and Brad Radford during this weekend’s match against Brothers because of Twenty20 representative duties, along with a number of other personnel because of outside commitments.

Taviani will not use the unavailability as an excuse, however, saying his team now needs to build on Saturday’s win.

“Overall it was a solid performance, but there’s a few things we still need to improve on,” he said.

Wests scored a first innings 38- run win over Saints at JCU Oval, with Saints bowled for 231 chasing Wests’ target of 269.

Brothers went for the outright result against Norths after reaching 9/ 236 chasing 181 – with Herbie Heuir ( 87) top scoring – but Norths finished the day’s final session at 1/ 81 to leave Brothers with a first innings win.
