Maggie becomes Cowboys Island in fun title push

- DOMANII CAMERON

COWBOYS hysteria hasn’t just been restricted to the mainland, with the region’s immense pride travelling across the sea.

Magnetic Island has been renamed Cowboys Island this week in a bid to rally behind the North’s home team.

Townsville Enterprise chief executive officer Patricia O’Callaghan said it was the first time the island had been renamed in honour of the Cowboys.

“For us it’s important, we’re all so excited,” she said. “The community spirit is high ( and) it’s also an opportunity while the national spotlight is on us to promote the region.”

Ms O’Callaghan said it was a perfect opportunity to combine both brands.

“A lot of Magnetic Island residents are major fans,” she said.

“Tourists are getting right behind the initiative.

“People want to be a part of ( the NRL grand final).

“We’re encouraging tourism operators to get behind the Cowboys and everyone ( to) show their blue and yellow.”

Mayor Jenny Hill said it was only fitting that Magnetic Island be renamed in honour of the team.

“Welcome to Cowboys Island,” she said.

“If you have to jump overboard swim to Thurston Bay.

“Then you’ve got Cooper Quay, Morgan’s Mountain, Lowe Harbour and you could rename X Base Taumalolo’s Island Paradise.”

Cr Hill said it was about having some fun.

“But ultimately it’s about showing the rest of Australia that North Queensland is the heart and soul of the Cowboys,” she said.

“There’s no reason why other parts of North Queensland couldn’t be named after them.

“I would encourage other mayors this week to consider featuring a player to show their support.”
