PNG gun Boas in doubt
STAR PNG halfback Watson Boas will have to pass a number of mid- week concussion tests to play in Sunday’s Intrust Super Premiership clash against the Penrith Panthers.
Boas was one of the H u n t e r s ’ s t a n d o u t players in S u n d a y ’ s h i s t o r i c 12- 10 grand final win over Sunshine Coast on Sunday, but his day was cut short in the 74th minute when he came off second best in a tackle and suffered a serious head knock.
The young gun, who scored PNG’s first try of the match, was stretchered off and immediately sent to hospital, meaning he missed the moment when his brother Ase hoisted the Intrust Super Cup trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
But coach Michael Marum is confident Boas will be cleared to play in the state championship on NRL grand final day.
He said the talented No. 7 would have to prove his fitness by the middle of the week to go to Sydney.
“Watson got back ( on Sunday night) and is in a good condition again,” Marum said.
“He will be doing his cognitive testing mid- week to get a clearance and should be okay to play this Sunday.”
He said his best option if Boas did not pass the necessary tests was to move hooker Wartovo Puara to the halves and bring Silas Gahuna in as rake.
The Hunters will play the Panthers’ reserve grade side after Penrith beat Wyong Roos 20- 12 on Sunday night.
