City set for tennis action
TENNIS Townsville is set for a massive few days of tennis, starting tomorrow at 8am with the North Queensland junior championships.
On Friday the junior championship finals will be held followed by the start of the North Queensland Open Championships at 3pm.
It promises to be an action packed few days for the city. The junior championships include divisions from under10s to under- 16s.
One hundred and twenty junior players from around Queensland and interstate will compete for silver Australian ranking points in the junior tournament.
The North Queensland Open is an Australian Money Tournament ( AMT) with a silver status, that will run over the weekend, concluding with the AMT finals from 11am on Sunday.
The tournament has attracted 100 players of all levels, from club level through to players of an international calibre, including defending champion Clint Letcher.
Letcher is second seed in the AMT men’s singles event, behind number one seed, Mitchell Wilson from Mackay.
Townsville’s Bradley Clews is the number five seed, and will be hoping for back- to- back wins, after taking home the Burdekin Open trophy last weekend.
Number one seed in the AMT women’s singles is Emma Hayman.
Hayman has previously played Federation Cup for New Zealand, and is currently ranked 64 in Australia while second seed and Townsville player Taylor Douglas will also be in the mix.
