One dumb question to decide our future direction

-

IN view of the raging debate over the SSM issue, I find it appalling that the politicians and caretakers of our society have allowed the whole thing to be “dumbed down” to such an extent as the one question on the plebiscite would suggest.

If this is really an issue about rights, I would like someone to explain just what rights I possess as a married heterosexual that aren’t available to all. About the only thing that readily comes to mind is the right to tick a box in the marital status section when filling out applications.

The question then must be asked: why is it so important to be able to tick the married box? Could it be for the sake of invisibility and hence the notion of normality? I for one will insist that when/ if this comes to pass, another box follows that clearly states if the married person is the same or opposite sex.

It is one thing to be accepting of an alternative lifestyle, but something completely different to say it’s normal, as it can only ever be in conflict with mother nature.

This debate should not ever be seen as just about individual rights, but a debate about our society’s future direction, the full impacts of which can’t be known for decades into the future.

Please remember this when answering the one “dumb” question. STEPHEN DEAL, Annandale.
